Long before the Tooth Fairy fluttered into nurseries around the world, the people of the far North told stories of tiny guardians who would leave tand-fé, or a tooth fee, and became known as tannfeer, the tooth fairies of the Nordic snows. According to legend, these gentle spirits watched over children through winter nights, keeping their dreams warm and their futures bright.

When a child lost a baby tooth, it was said to hold a spark of their growing strength, a token of bravery, courage, and the passage from little to big. The tannfeer would collect these precious tokens and carry them high into the Northern Lights, where each tooth added a shimmer to the sky’s dancing colors.

Parents placed a child’s tooth by the window or under a pillow so the tannfeer could find it easily. In return, the fairy would leave a gift of thanks, a small coin, a stone charm, or a sliver of silver dust, symbolizing protection for the child as they stepped into their next chapter of childhood.

The tale says:

“As long as a child offers a tooth with hope and wonder, the Northern Lights will dance brightly for them.”

And so, for more than a thousand years, the tradition has endured, passed from hearth to home, mother to child, from one glowing winter to the next.
